Description

Qualitative and Quantitative Respirator Fit Testing

Accurate Safety Compliance offers both Qualitative and Quantitative Respirator Fit Testing to verify that employees have a proper seal and effective protection when wearing respirators.

While most clients choose Qualitative Fit Testing for its ease and efficiency, Quantitative Fit Testing offers a higher level of precision by measuring the actual fit factor of the respirator.

NFPA standards require Quantitative Fit Testing for certain high-risk environments and full-face respirators, ensuring the most accurate assessment of protection available.

We offer both methods, they are OSHA-accepted and available to meet your compliance needs.

When is Fit Testing Required?

Per OSHA CFR 29.134, fit testing must be conducted:

  • Before first use of a respirator in the workplace
  • Annually (at least once every 12 months)
  • Whenever switching to a different make, model, style, or size respirator
  • After significant facial changes (weight fluctuation, surgery, dental work, etc.)
  • Whenever an employee reports difficulty with respirator fit

Testing Methods

Qualitative Fit Testing (QLFT):

  • A pass/fail test using OSHA-approved substances (such as saccharin or Bitrex) to determine if the wearer can detect the test agent. Best for N95s and half-mask respirators in lower-risk environments.

Quantitative Fit Testing (QNFT):

  • Uses a particle-counting instrument to measure leakage and calculate a fit factor, providing a more precise and data-driven assessment. Required for full-face respirators and higher hazard levels.

What You Can Expect

  • OSHA-accepted testing protocols
  • Testing with the exact make, model, style, and size of respirator your employees use on the job
  • Professional administration by trained safety specialists
  • Documentation for your compliance records
  • Guidance on proper donning, doffing, and seal checks

Prerequisites

Medical Evaluation

Medical Evaluations are required before an employee can be Fit Tested for a Respirator or wear one on the job.

When Is a Medical Evaluation Required?

Required if the employee is:

  • Wearing a tight-fitting respirator (e.g., N95, half-face, full-face)
  • Wearing any respirator as a job requirement
  • Undergoing fit testing for such a respirator

Not required if the respirator is:

  • Voluntarily used (e.g., for comfort), and
  • It's a dust mask (filtering facepiece respirator)
  • (Even then, employers must provide OSHA’s voluntary use info sheet)
