Overhead and Gantry Crane Operator Certification Training

Course Overview:

This Overhead and Gantry Crane Operator Certification Training Course provides operators, riggers, and maintenance personnel with the knowledge and hands-on skills needed to safely operate, inspect, and maintain overhead and gantry cranes.

Learners will understand applicable regulations, pre-use requirements, safe load-handling techniques, and common hazards associated with bridge cranes, gantry cranes, workstation cranes, and hoist systems used in manufacturing, industrial, and maintenance environments.

Course Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the components, functions, and limitations of overhead and gantry cranes.
  • Understand OSHA, ASME, and manufacturer requirements for safe crane operation.
  • Perform required pre-operation and frequent inspections and document findings.
  • Interpret rated load capacities, load charts, and hoist limitations.
  • Execute safe lifting, rigging, and load-handling operations.
  • Recognize hazards such as overloading, side pulling, pinch points, electrical contact, and improper rigging selection.
  • Follow proper shutdown, securing, and post-operation procedures.
  • Demonstrate competency through written assessment and practical evaluation.

Purpose:

The purpose of this course is to ensure that employees who operate overhead and gantry cranes have the knowledge and practical skills necessary to perform lifting operations safely, efficiently, and in compliance with OSHA, ASME, and manufacturer requirements.

This training is designed to prevent accidents, equipment damage, and injuries by teaching operators how to properly inspect cranes and hoists, understand load capacities, evaluate hazards, use correct rigging, and execute controlled lifting procedures in real-world industrial environments.

Target Audience:

  • Overhead crane and gantry crane operators
  • Fabrication, production, and warehouse personnel
  • Mechanics and maintenance personnel
  • Supervisors responsible for lifting operations
  • Any employee assigned to use overhead or gantry cranes

Duration:

  • Total Course Time: 4–6 hours
  • Classroom / Online Theory: 2–4 hours
  • Practical / Hands-On Evaluation: 1–2 hours

Certification:

Upon successful completion of the course, students will receive an Overhead and Gantry Crane Certification, containing each employee’s name, the trainer’s signature, and the dates of training, valid for five years.

The certificate of completion is available for review by employees and their authorized representatives within the student’s Training Passport, a digital training history containing all recorded training events.

Assessment:

  • Written Exam: 20–30 multiple-choice questions
  • Practical Evaluation: Demonstration of safe operation
  • Passing Criteria: 80% on written exam + competent rating for hands-on skills

Successful participants receive a Certificate of Training and a documented training record for employer compliance.

Prerequisites:

Before enrolling in this course, participants should meet the following requirements to ensure they can safely and effectively complete the training:

  • Minimum Age & Authorization: Participants must be at least 18 years old and authorized by their employer to operate or work near overhead or gantry cranes.
  • Physical Capability: Must be able to safely operate crane controls, stand/walk for long periods, and perform rigging duties; good vision and hearing are required.
  • Basic Knowledge & Skills: Familiarity with general workplace safety, ability to read load capacities and rigging documentation, and understanding of communication signals.
  • Company Requirements: Completion of any safety orientation or internal training modules and supervisor approval to attend the course.

These prerequisites ensure all participants are prepared to gain the maximum benefit from both classroom and hands-on crane operation training.

OSHA Requirements for Overhead & Gantry Cranes

Overhead and gantry cranes fall under OSHA’s General Industry standards. OSHA requires that operators be trained, competent, and capable of safely performing lifting operations by:

  • Following OSHA 29 CFR 1910.179 – Overhead and Gantry Cranes
  • Following OSHA 29 CFR 1910.184 – Slings
  • Conducting required daily and periodic inspections
  • Using proper rigging and lifting practices
  • Understanding rated capacities and hoist limitations
  • Avoiding electrical hazards and maintaining proper clearances
  • Operating the equipment safely and per manufacturer guidelines
